Rust-A-Thon 2021

To mitigate and control corrosion on combat systems aboard United States Navy ships and vessels, the U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division (NSWC PHD) in Port Hueneme, California, has announced the launch of “Rust-A-Thon,” a research competition.

The 2021 Rust-A-Thon event will be testing conversion coatings on aluminum alloys.


To address these issues, NSWC PHD teamed up with  Fathomwerx, Matter Labs, NASA Kennedy Space Center, NAVAIR, Naval Research Labs, and U.S. Bureau of Reclamation for the innovative competition.

Event Timeline:

June 15 - July 15: Distribute and collect metal plates - Companies will receive, coat and return 


​​July 15 - September 1: Distribute plates for testing to partner facilities, test, and collect plates and results
